    Do Not Go Beyond What Is Written’ (1 Cor 4:6) and Adventist Hermeneutics

    Paul’s statement in 1 Corinthians 4:61 has been rightly labelled an “enigmatic saying.”2 Nonetheless, the phrase “do not beyond what is written” was a meaningful injunction for the Corinthians.3 When the referent of ἃ γέγραπται (“what is written”) is identified, implications and application for contemporary church can be derived from Paul’s injunction “do not go beyond what is written.”

    Insight from Biblical Concept of Political Leadership and Social Services as Models for Christians and Politics in Nigeria

    This essay begins from the premise that modern concept of political practices and processes may not be read into the Bible. However, it attempts to examine the biblical concept of politics using the lives of certain biblical characters that served in public/political offices whose positions enabled them to provide some form of social services to the people. It, then, argues that contemporary Christians can promote biblical values in governance and policy making as well as provide meaningful social services to their constituency and citizens in general. This paper concludes by identifying some areas that biblical Concept of politics can provide models for platform for Christian Social Service in Nigeria.

    Reading Mark 5:1-20 in the Context of Exorcism in African Christian Theology: Implications for the Seventh-day Adventist Church

    Mark 5:1-20 provides one of the most intriguing accounts of exorcism in the ministry of Jesus. It relates the healing of the demoniac in the region of the Gerasenes. This passage is the longest exorcism narrative reported by Mark. As in the other Synoptic Gospels, the event in Mark occurs just after the crossing of the Sea of Galilee and the calming of the storm that threatened the safety of Jesus and his disciples. The story shows the faint-heartedness of the disciples, Jesus’ lordship over nature, and the subsequent rebuke of the lack of faith of the disciples (Mark 4:35-41). The uniqueness of the healing of the demoniac in Mark 5 is further illustrated because “this is the only exorcism that mentions multiple demons and Jesus' asking for their name, as if to garner power over them. It is also the only one that involves animals and that provokes opposition and a plea for him to leave.”

    This paper discusses the hospitality in the teaching of Jesus s recorded in Luke 14:12-14. It argues that the kind of radical hospitality that Jesus advocates in the Lukan passage is still relevant for Christians to day and could enhance mission
