Abstract
Paul’s statement in 1 Corinthians 4:61 has been rightly labelled an “enigmatic saying.”2 Nonetheless, the phrase “do not
beyond what is written” was a meaningful injunction for the Corinthians.3 When the referent of ἃ γέγραπται (“what is
written”) is identified, implications and application for contemporary church can be derived from Paul’s injunction “do
not go beyond what is written.”
