Abstract

When did the Seventh-day Adventist Church start in North Ghana Mission? Who were the pioneers of Adventism in northern Ghana? What shaped Adventism in northern Ghana from 1950 to 2023? What contribution did Adventists make to the socio-economic life of the people in the North? This research aims to study the historical beginning and development of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North Ghana Mission from 1950 to 2023. The research used the historical documentary method. The study revealed that in 1950, Emmanuel Bruce Akyiano began officially the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the North Ghana Mission. From a district status in 1950, the field attained a mission status in 1968, thus becoming the very first field carved out of the Ghana Mission. Seventh-day Adventists influenced lives in northern Ghana through their educational and medical works, welfare and relief services; they used public evangelistic campaigns, prison evangelism, youth and women’s ministries activities, music, Bible correspondence lessons (VOP lessons), and camp meetings to shape their presence in the North. The study took cognizance of the challenges Adventism encountered in the North such as language and culture barriers, Islam and traditional beliefs, strong presence of Roman Catholicism, and a lack of human and financial resources. The study recommended that an in-depth research on the history of the local churches or districts be made; that non-northern native prospective workers should first study the northern culture and learn to speak at least one of the major northern languages; that the Mission gets agriculture experts to train church members in new techniques and methods of farming, and that all historical sites and artifacts be well preserved. Being the first comprehensive historical study of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North Ghana Mission, the study made a significant contribution to the knowledge of Adventism in northern Ghana, and to the history of Christianity in Ghana, and in Africa in general.
